Charity

TheNeverEndingStory promotes child and adult literacy (both within and outside of traditional educational settings), and the establishment of a global community of story lovers (thus encouraging social inclusion).

It is supported by two UK-based literacy charities:

Book Aid International
Book Aid International works in 18 countries in sub-Saharan Africa and Palestine providing over half a million books and journals each year to libraries, hospitals, refugee camps and schools.

Its vision is of a world in which everyone enjoys access to the information they need, and no country is without a lively local book trade that reflects local values and culture.

The majority of Book Aid Internationalís support goes to rural and urban libraries, which are free and accessible to everyone. The charity works with library partners to develop their pivotal role in the community.

For the longer term Book Aid International is supporting the growth of local publishing and bookselling so that affordable books can be produced which reflect the local languages and culture.

The National Literacy Trust
The National Literacy Trust, founded in 1993, is an independent charity dedicated to building a literate nation. It is the only organisation concerned with raising literacy standards for all age groups throughout the UK.

The Trustís purpose is to make an independent, strategic and practical contribution to the creation of a society in which all can enjoy the skills, confidence and pleasures of literacy to support their educational, economic, social and cultural goals.

It focuses on
  • Providing a support network: its web-based literacy support network, now strengthened by the Literacy and Social Inclusion project, pulls together the best ideas and information to help everyone share good practice.
  • Putting ideas into practice: its practical initiatives - Reading Is Fundamental UK, the National Reading Campaign, Talk To Your Baby, Reading The Game, Reading Connects, and the Vital Link - develop ways of working in partnership to turn promising ideas into effective action.
  • Promoting a systems approach: its emphasis on all the factors that affect literacy achievement encourages those interventions that will be most effective in the long term.
